Chartered in Suffolk, Virginia in 1940, Alpha Iota is one of the oldest graduate chapters in the Third District. Our brothers are educators, executives, veterans, ministers, and tradesmen — bonded by the four cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift.

Founded at Howard University on November 17, 1911 — the first international Greek-letter fraternity founded at a historically Black college.
Founders Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, and Frank Coleman, along with their faculty adviser Dr. Ernest Everett Just, established the four cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift that still guide every chapter today.
